The majority of the photos on this page were taken in January 1959 at the original Five Spot and the Half Note both located in New York City. The Five Spot photos are of Kenny Dorham, Mal Waldron, Peck Morrison and a drummer whose name I forgot, in one group. The other group consisted of Donald Byrd, Lou Donaldson, Ray Bryant, Addison Farmer and another drummer whose name I forgot.  The Five Spot hired Monk  for 7 months in 1957 which gave Monk and the club credibility. Ornette Coleman also had a 6 week gig in 1959. The Five Spot was a great club, small, intimate, and a truly attentive clientele. Who could ask for anything more? The photos from the Half Note include Al Cohn, Zoot Sims, Gene Quill and Nobby Totah.

The portrait of Rahsaan Roland Kirk was taken on the street ( 6th Avenue ) in NYC in 1976. The abstract is Harry Allen ...and he recognized himself because of his embouchure.
